Choose your nap length
What is a caffeine nap?
A caffeine nap (sometimes called a “coffee nap”) is a clever trick that pairs caffeine with a short nap. The idea: drink a cup of coffee, then immediately lie down for about 20 minutes. Caffeine takes roughly 20–30 minutes to be absorbed and start binding to the adenosine receptors that make you feel sleepy — so it kicks in right around the time you wake up, giving you a double boost from both the nap and the coffee.
Why caffeine timing matters (half-life)
Caffeine has a half-life of about 5–6 hours in a typical adult, meaning half of it is still circulating in your body that many hours after you drink it. That is why an afternoon coffee or energy drink can still be disrupting your sleep at bedtime. As a rule of thumb, stop caffeine at least 6 hours before bed — and if you are sensitive, aim for 8–10 hours.
Naps are also a great way to recover some lost sleep, but they should complement a good night, not replace it. For help planning your main sleep, try the sleep cycle calculator, the wake-up times calculator or the bedtime calculator.
